The strength of a metal under the action of short pulses is of great intere
st. Meanwhile, the problem concerning the magnitude of a tensile stress tha
t leads to cleavage has not yet been solved theoretically. In this paper, a
n attempt is made to clarify, using the mathematical simulation method, the
parameters of pulse radiation that can yield the clearest answer to the qu
estion of which of the existing theories of strength works best in metallic
materials subjected to short pulses of micro- or nanosecond range. Recomme
ndation are given on the optimal experimental design. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/
