For the present study data was collected from 630 women and men who worked
in gender-typed occupations or who were undergoing vocational training for
one of these professions. We examined whether the suitability of the genera
l image of the profession and the social gender-role orientation (masculini
ty and femininity) has any effects on the experience of gender-role conflic
ts. The results support the fact that, in the Self-perception of the people
examined, there is a correlation between the kind of occupation in which t
hey work and gender-role orientation; women and men attribute more female q
ualities to themselves when working in female-typed occupations and more ma
le qualities when working-in male-typed occupations. However the degree of
suitability does not affect the experience of gender-role conflicts. Women,
however, show a more intensive gender-role conflict than men in all occupa
tions.
