Abstract
Based on the magnetohydrodynamic energy principle, it is proved that Gold-H oyle's nonlinear force-free magnetic held is unstable. This disproves the s ufficient criterion for stability of nonlinear force-free magnetic fields g iven by Kruger that a nonlinear force-free field is stable if the maximum a bsolute value of the force-free factor is smaller than the lowest eigenvalu e associated with the domain of interest.
