We prospectively evaluated 53 patients with prosthetic joints and 27 patien
ts with other orthopedic prosthetic devices who developed Staphylococcus au
reus bacteremia (SAB). After exclusion of patients with primary postoperati
ve infections, the risk of a prosthesis becoming infected by means of hemat
ogenous seeding after SAB was 34% (15 of 44 patients) for prosthetic joints
and 7% (1 of 15 patients) for other orthopedic prostheses.
