ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN PART I-COMMUNICATIONS
Asymmetric bidirectional satellite communication systems (multimedia satell
ite communication systems) with the capability of economical and high-speed
multimedia access using terrestrial stations in the uplink and satellite c
ircuits in the downlinks are proposed and an experimental prototype is fabr
icated. In this system, ATM cell/IP packets are transmitted in the satellit
e circuits and performance is evaluated in terms of the error characteristi
cs of the ATM layer/IP layer, which play an important role in system design
. In this respect, a simple error model is used to represent the satellite
circuit part of the multimedia communication system and the actually measur
ed results and their corresponding evaluation are also presented. By determ
ination of proper parameters and their values, good agreement is seen betwe
en the calculated results based on the presented model and the measured one
s. At a cell loss rate of 10(-7), the required E-b/N-0 of the system is abo
ut 4.7 dB. Further, the system margin is shown to be about 7 dB in achievin
g such EbN0 ratios, which indicates that the system possesses sufficient re
alization capability. (C) 2001 Scripta Technica.
