A field-particle model has been developed which models the movement of char
ged particles through a gas under the influence of an electromagnetic field
. The operation of the model is illustrated by modelling scattering, ionisa
tion and charge build-up in molecular hydrogen gas at low pressure. Simulat
ion results obtained using typical experimental data give very reasonable a
greement with measurements of drift velocity, diffusion coefficients and To
wnsend's first coefficient.
