Highly sensitive polarized absorption measurement by the optical waveg
uide (OWG) detection system was made to analyze the orientation of pho
togenerated radicals in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. The extinction c
oefficient changes upon photoexcitation of specific ion-pair charge-tr
ansfer complexes between two kinds of amphiphilic 4,4'-bipyridinium an
d tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate were estimated by thi
s system. Amphiphilic 4,4'-bipyridinium ions in LB films deposited dir
ectly on an OWG showed different anisotropy from those deposited on an
OWG covered with three monolayers of cadmium arachidate. The structur
e of substituents also affected the orientation.
