Abstract
Genetic characterisation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) DNA isolate d from a donor cornea before and after corneal transplantation demonstrated the transmission of HSV-1 through transplantation. This study is the first to provide conclusive evidence for the transmission of HSV-1 by penetratin g keratoplasty with subsequent reactivation of donor-derived HSV-1 in the t ransplanted cornea.
