When thienyl Schiff base 1 reacted with Fe-2(CO)(9) under very mild co
nditions in benzene three major products were obtained: (1) a cyclomet
alated (mu-eta(1):eta(2)-thienyl; eta(1) eta(1)(N))-hexacarbonyldiiron
complex, 2, (2) a hexacarbonyldiiron complex with an organic ligand,
which is composed of two thienyl moieties derived from the original th
ienyl imine and coupled together by a C-C bond, 3, and (3) a hydrogena
tion product of the original thienyl Schiff base. Molecular structures
of compounds 2b and 3a have been determined by single-crystal X-ray d
iffraction.
