Evolutionary trends in the genus Bordetella

The genus Bordetella comprises seven species with pathogenic potential for different host organisms. This article attempts to review our current knowl edge about the systematics and evolution of this important group of pathoge ns, their relationship to environmental microorganisms and about molecular mechanisms of host adaptation.
