We measured the capture-fission excitation functions for the S-32+Ta-181 re
action and the S-38+Ta-181 reaction. (The radioactive S-38 beam was produce
d by projectile fragmentation.) In the S-32-induced reaction, an incomplete
fusion component was observed at high energies, with an average linear mom
entum transfer corresponding to the escape of an alpha particle. The deduce
d interaction barrier heights were 130.7+/-0.3 and 124.8+/-0.3 MeV for the
S-32- d S-38-induced reactions. respectively. No differences between the tw
o reactions were observed beyond a simple shift in the interaction barrier
height.
