This paper presents a new approach for three-dimensional parting line searc
h of injection moulded parts. In previous work, automatic parting line sear
ch is usually based on surface edge-loops. However, it is possible that edg
e-loops may not be present in a particular parting location. In the present
research, all the surfaces in an initial solid model are divided into unio
n parting surfaces and multiple parting surfaces. The multiple parting surf
aces are decomposed into several union parting surfaces using the discrete
model method before parting line search, creating the new edges as potentia
l parting lines. Parting line search is completed based on the pure union p
arting surface model. Case studies show that the present research has solve
d some of the common problems faced in the previous work.
