The propagation of a laser beam near the interface between a linear dielect
ric and a photorefractive crystal is considered. The specific features of f
ormation of surface waves are studied, the profiles of such surface modes a
re numerically calculated, and guiding properties of the interface are anal
ysed. Using the method of effective particles, the second-order ordinary di
fferential equation describing the trajectory of a beam reflecting from the
interface is obtained and analysed.
