Abstract
Surface reconstruction phases of Au/Si(0 0 1) system were studied with scan ning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction in a converge range of 0.3-2.5 ML and an annealing temperature range of RT to 800 degree sC, and a structure diagram was presented. In addition to the structures re ported previously, two new phases were discovered; a 8 x 2 structure in a l ow coverage and a ((10)(2) (0)(7)) structure in coexistence with c(8 x 2) a nd 5 x 3 structures. In the latter structure a characteristic phase boundar y that is considered to serve as a generation center for 5 x 3 structure wa s observed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
