Reflection absorption infrared (RAIR) spectroscopy and temperature programm
ed desorption have bern used to study the adsorption and reaction chemistry
of ethylenediamine on Pt(1 1 1) over the temperature range of 80-550 K. In
agreement with previous studies, ethylenediamine is found to adsorb withou
t dissociation between 80 and 300 K. At 360 K, large changes in the RAIR sp
ectra reveal that the molecule rearranges to form a new surface species, wh
ich is identified as diaminoethylene, H2NCCNH2. At temperatures above 360 K
, diaminoethylene decomposes to form aminomethylidyne, CNH2. (C) 2000 Elsev
