The synthesis of two tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives, one carrying arm
s incorporating four dibenzylammonium centers and the other encompassing tw
o annulated crown ether rings - i.e., hydrogen bond donor and acceptor func
tions, respectively, is described. In the presence of macrocyclic polyether
s - e.g., DB24C8 and BPP34C10 - and dibenzylammonium hexafluorophosphate, t
hese two TTF derivatives form pseudorotaxanes as evidenced by H-1 NMR spect
roscopy, mass spectrometry, and differential pulse voltammetry. (C) 2001 El
