We propose a high-frequency traveling-wave integrated electro-optic modulat
or based on a periodically poled LiNbO3. The traveling velocity of the opti
cal wave and the electrical wave velocity in the waveguide can be quasimatc
hed due to the periodic structure. Using this design, a modulation frequenc
y of several hundred GHz can be realized. Wide-bandwidth modulation is also
achievable by employing an aperiodic domain grating. (C) 2001 American Ins
