The schizophrenia spectrum and the bipolar disorder spectrum involve differ
ent types of psychotic disorders. Both disorders have been linked to creati
vity.
Primary-process thinking is evident in all psychotic disorders. Primary-pro
cess thinking has also been found to relate to creativity in normal populat
ions. One possibility is that different dimensions of primary-process thoug
ht are dominant in different disorders. The cognitive dimension may be more
dominant in the schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and the affective dimens
ion may be more dominant in bipolar disorders. Future research should inves
tigate how primary-process thinking differs in these disorders and the impl
ications for creative functioning.
