Management of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in the intensive care unit

Severe hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are uncommon primary causes for a dmission to the intensive care unit, but are significantly associated with mortality rates if not recognized and treated appropriately In this article , following an initial review of thyroid physiology and thyroid testing, th e pathogenesis, clinical presentations, and treatments of thyroid storm and myxedema coma are reviewed.
