Abstract
The physical basis for parameterizing topographic stress due to unreso lved eddies is examined in a quasi-geostrophic barotropic model. Topog raphic stress parameterization is shown to represent two effects of ed dies: attraction of the flow to a statistical equilibrium featuring to pographically correlated mean currents, and dissipation of potential e nstrophy. Performance is evaluated by comparing parameterized low-reso lution models with explicit high-resolution models.
