AN OUTBREAK OF PACHECOS PARROT DISEASE IN A PRIVATE AVIARY

The outbreak and the course of an epidemic disease of parots with a hi gh morbidity and death rate among a mixed population are described. In the beginning the cause of the rapidly spreading disease could not be found clinically. Pathological, histological and virological investig ations, however, revealed a herpesvirus-linked disease called Pacheco' s parrot disease (PPD). Different therapeutic attempts are described. The possibilities of vaccination with a commercial or autogenous vacci ne are discussed.
