Abstract
Campylobacteriosis is a zoonotic disease that gets transmitted to human bei ngs through live or dressed chicken. Incidence of Campylobacter jejuni in c hicken and their carcasses indicates the result of exposure. Isolation of C ampylobacter jejuni 25 cloacal samples from live poultry birds, 15 intestin al swabs from dead birds and 25 meat surface swabs from various commercial broiler poultry meat outlet was attempted. A total of 27 isolates were obta ined from the 65 samples tested. Forty eight percent of the cloacal samples , 33.4% of the intestinal swabs and 40% of meat surface samples were confir med to contain C. jejuni. Antibiotic sensitivity pattern revealed that nali dixic acid, gentamicin and enrofloxacin can be used for the effective contr ol of this infection as all the isolates were 100% sensitive to these antib iotics. The importance of personal hygienic measures of the persons in poul try industry and sanitary measures to be adopted at poultry meat outlets to prevent the occurrence of this disease in human beings are also discussed.
