CORRECTION OF THE TYPE LOCALITY OF STOKELLS SMELT, STOKELLIA-ANISODON(STOKELL) 1941 (PISCES, RETROPINNIDAE)

The type locality for Stokellia anisodon (Stokell) was given as the Wa iau River, Southland. However, extensive collection has failed to reve al this species in any rivers along the east coast of the South Island south of the Waitaki River, nor in the rivers of Southland, Furthermo re, substantial samples of retropinnid smelts from the Waiau River in Southland comprised only Retropinna retropinna (Richardson). I conclud e, therefore, that the correct type locality is more probably the Waia u-ua River in North Canterbury.
