Abstract
Polymorphisms in the promoter region of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) af fect the amount of amyloid peptide (A beta) in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. We measured A beta load immunohistochemically in regio ns 8 and 9 of Brodman's area in 74 people with Alzheimer's disease. The amo unt of A beta deposition was independent of APOE genotype in our cohort. Th ese findings in patients with confirmed Alzheimer's disease are consistent with the hypothesis that variation it; AWE expression directly affects Alzh eimer's disease pathology.
