We have extended the polynomial method to a unified approach to analyze hol
low conducting waveguides of arbitrary cross section. It was found suitable
only for lower order modes due to the singular matrix problem when the sta
ndard eigenvalue algorithm is used. In this paper, the QZ factorization for
generalized eigenvalues is employed to overcome this drawback. The normali
zed cutoff wavelengths of the first 100 modes in the elliptic waveguides wi
th different ellipticities are obtained using the present method and are co
mpared with those of the analytic method. Excellent agreements are observed
