Abstract
The matrix mesophase layers of the carbon-carbon composites were orien ted perpendicular to the carbon fibers by an 8 kG magnetic field. This study is concerned with the properties of the composites produced by this method It was found that unidirectional carbon-carbon composites fabricated in the 8 kG magnetic field exhibit a higher degree of graph itization and larger crystallite height. The ductility increases remar kably, but the flexural strength decreases slightly compared with the unidirectional carbon-carbon composites fabricated without the magneti c field.
