We have made investigations of the magnetic interactions of Mn spins in the
geometrically frustrated Laves-phase compounds Y0.96Sc0.04Mn2 and Y(Mn0.97
Al0.03)(2) by measuring the magnetic hyperfine field on Cd-111 as a functio
n of temperature and applied magnetic field using perturbed-angular-correla
tion (PAC) spectroscopy. In Y0.96Sc0.04Mn2 we find evidence for short-range
magnetic correlations with a broad distribution of spin-relaxation times,
consistent with spin-liquid-like behaviour. In Y(Mn0.97Al0.03)(2) the resul
ts reveal static Mn spins developing long-range magnetic ordering in a spin
