Reaction of [WI2(CO)(NCMe)(eta (RC2R)-R-2)(2)] (R = Me, Ph) with one equiva
lent of L {L = 3-(CO2Na)-py. 4-(CO2Na)-py. 3,4-(CO2Na),-py, 3,5-(CO2Na),(2)
py, 3-(SO2Na)-py} in a mixture of CH2Cl2-CH3OH (1:1 ratio) at room temperat
ure gave the acetonitrile replaced products, [WI2(CO)L(eta (2)-RC2R)(2)] (1
-10) in good yield. The 2-butyne complexes are slightly water-soluble, wher
eas the diphenylacetylene complexes are insoluble in water. Treatment of [W
I2(CO)(3)(NCMe)(2)] with two equivalents of propiolic acid (HC2CO2H) in CH2
Cl2 at 0 degreesC yields the bis(propiolic acid) complex [WI2(CO)(NCMe)(eta
(2) HC2CO2H)(2)] (11). Reaction of II with two equivalents of NaOH in MeOH
-CH2Cl2 (1:1) affords the completely water-soluble; complex, [WI2(CO)(NCMe)
(eta (2)-HC2CO2Na)(2)] (12) in 58% yield. All the new complexes 1-12 were c
haracterised by elemental analysis (C. H, and N), IR and H-1 NMR spectrosco
