Antimicrobial and anthelmintic resistance are growing issues for the equine
practitioner. The development of antimicrobial or anthelmintic resistance
is a source of significant concern because of increased frequency of treatm
ent failures and increased treatment costs. In addition, antimicrobial resi
stance may have important consequences for public health. Only through judi
cious use can the efficacy of antimicrobials and anthelmintics be prolonged
. This article discusses the development of resistance and suggestions for
control.
