Abstract
This study concerns a theoretical investigation based on the isothermal equ ation of state to explain the inverse Hall-Petch relationship and theoretic al limit of mechanical stability of grain boundaries in the nanocrystalline metals. It is suggested that the excess free volume of the grain boundary atoms may induce a softening effect and account for the above mentioned phe nomena below a critical grain size.
