A recent new collection of intestinal capillariids from the atherinid fish
Chirostoma estor Jordan, a type host of Capillaria patzcuarensis Osorio-Sar
abia, Perez-Ponce de Leon et Salgado-Maldonado, 1986, from Lake Patzcuaro i
n Michoacan, Mexico (type locality) made it possible to study in detail the
morphology of this insufficiently known nematode parasite. Morphologically
identical and apparently conspecific females were also recorded from the g
oodeid Alloophorus robustus (Bean) from the same locality. All main morphol
ogical and biometrical features of this species correspond to Pseudocapilla
ria tomentosa (Dujardin, 1843) and, therefore, C. patzcurarensis is conside
red a junior synonym of P. tomentosa. The Mexican specimens are briefly des
cribed and illustrated. This Holarctic, little-host specific nematode speci
es may have been introduced into Lake Patzcuaro along with the introduction
of carp, Cyprinus carpio L., in the lake.
