The pore structures of four conventional stationary phases for reverse
d-phase liquid chromatography have been studied and compared. Helium p
ycnometry was used to determine the total porosity of the packing. Nit
rogen sorptometry, inverse size-exclusion chromatography and mercury i
ntrusion porosimetry have been applied to Kromasil, Vydac, YMC and Zor
bax 10 mu m particles of C-18 chemically bonded silica. The agreement
between the results derived from the three methods used for the determ
ination of the volume pore size and the surface area distributions is
excellent.
