Abstract
Bismuth had been in use fur over a century when it was almost complete ly removed from the market in 1973 because of reports of severe bismut h-related encephalopathy. Also, bismuth used as a bacteriostatic agent for the longterm treatment of syphilis has been superseded by penicil lin, and preparations of bismuth fur parenteral use are no longer avai lable.
