In addition to exposure to infectious agents, such as porcine reproductive
and respiratory syndrome virus and swine influenza virus, nursery pigs freq
uently encounter problems of a noninfectious nature, including behavior and
nutritional deficiencies. This article provides a brief review of exudativ
e epidermitis, sarcoptic mange, vitamin E-selenium deficiency, some specifi
c toxicologic problems, and behavioral issues that plague early-weaned pigs
raised in today's intensive management systems.
