This paper describes a prototype low-power wireless link designed for embed
ding into everyday objects. After a brief description of the hardware platf
orm, we discuss protocols for discovery and long-term rendezvous, contrasti
ng our approach with master-based approaches. The protocols are presented a
s examples drawn from a larger family of interoperable protocols which may
be important to cover the broad range of applications for this sort of netw
ork. We then describe some of the applications built using PEN, and add som
e observations on spectrum costs, and future designs. (C) 2001 Elsevier Sci
