Abstract
The endothelium, long considered merely an inert, semipermeable membrane be tween blood and the vessel wall, is now viewed as an important large and hi ghly active endocrine organ which is responsible for a number of vital phys iological functions. In this editorial we will discuss the important role o f the endothelium and endothelial (dys)function in health and disease, with particular focus on postmenopausal cardiovascular disease and preeclampsia .
