The endothelium, long considered merely an inert, semipermeable membrane be
tween blood and the vessel wall, is now viewed as an important large and hi
ghly active endocrine organ which is responsible for a number of vital phys
iological functions. In this editorial we will discuss the important role o
f the endothelium and endothelial (dys)function in health and disease, with
particular focus on postmenopausal cardiovascular disease and preeclampsia
