Abstract
Bi-0 has been used as a catalyst for the oxidative C-C bond cleavage under O-2 of alpha -ketols, alpha -hydroxy acids and terminal epoxides, to give t he corresponding carboxylic acids. The results are compared to those obtain ed in similar oxidation reactions catalysed by Bi-III carboxylates. These r eactions constitute the first example of the catalytic use of Bi-0 in oxida tion reactions, and the first evidence for a Bi-III/Bi-0 redox couple under molecular oxygen.
