Abstract
An analytic signal (AS) provides a powerful method for nonlinear oscillatio n problems, although it is rarely used for solving them. This paper compare s the AS with well-known averaging methods and clarifies why the AS is pref erred. New properties are obtained for the classical Van der Pol's generato r.
