Abstract
We compare quantum efficiency for erbium doped silica and fluoride gla sses as determined by the ratio of measured to calculated radiative li fetimes, with results directly measured by photoacoustics. Comparison shows that results are similar for fluoride glasses, whereas discrepan cies are found for silica glasses. Such difference is traced back to t he role of ligand field strength at the erbium ion site in the applica tion of Einstein relation linking spontaneous and stimulated emission.
