Polarization-dependent excited state absorption measurements of Cr4+:Y
3Al5O12, Cr4+:Y3Sc0.9Al4.1O12, and Cr4+:Y3Sc2Ga3O12 are presented and
analyzed. Different polarization dependencies and excited state absorp
tion spectra are observed. While Cr4+:Y3Al5O12 exhibits a strong polar
ization dependence, it is less pronounced in Cr4+:Y3Sc0.9Al4.1O12 and
strongly diminished for Cr4+:Y3Sc2Ga3O12. We believe that the poor eff
iciency or even the absence of laser oscillation in a variety of Cr4+-
doped garnets is caused by this different polarization and excited sta
te absorption behavior.
