One of the modern techniques for separating components from solution is the
application of Liquid membranes. The ability to selectively transport mixt
ure components in which a liquid membrane forms a distinct phase which sepa
rates two other liquid or gas phases is revealed. To increase the mass-tran
sfer effectiveness, the flow of two crossing streams is produced: the membr
ane and feeding solution and the membrane and receiving solution in such a
system that a vortex flow is achieved. This causes a renewal of the contact
area and considerable intensification of mass transfer.
