EU3+ in fluorozirconate glasses and glass-ceramics has been studied by
fluorescence line narrowing (FLN). In glasses, the excitation spectru
m of the D-5(0) level shows an inhomogeneous electronic peak with a ph
onon side band (PSB). The effect of the PSB in the narrowed emission s
pectra is analyzed. By a comparison of the spectra of devitrified glas
ses and data of EuZrF7 crystal, it has been possible to our knowledge
for the first time to obtain, precise information about the coordinati
on environment of the EU3+ ions in a glass matrix.
