Polarized spectroscopy studies of several perylene-based polycyclic ar
omatic hydrocarbons make it possible to evaluate electronic transition
moment directions, which, combined with calculations, leads to the de
termination of the structure of the lowest-energy conformers. Fluoresc
ence anisotropy data suggest conformational changes upon electronic ex
citation.
