The temporal characteristics and temperature dependence of the Gd3+ to
Cr3+ energy transfer in Cr3+:GSGG are presented. Following pulsed exc
itation of the S-8(7/2) --> P-6(7/2) transition in Gd3+, the risetime
of the resulting Cr3+ fluorescence was used to determine the Gd3+ to C
r3+ energy transfer rate. The results indicate a rapid energy migratio
n among the Gd3+ ions followed by a Gd3+ to Cr3+ energy transfer step
over a single fixed distance.
