This lecture provides an overview of advances in wound repair devised by ou
r multidisciplinary team of physicians, scientists, and students. Our colle
ctive efforts have devised products, drugs, and concepts that are facilitat
ing wound repair without infection and with the least possible scar. Some o
f the beneficial products and drugs developed or identified by our laborato
ry include nitrile examination and surgical gloves, magnification loupes, h
igh pressure syringe irrigation, Shur Clens(R), as well as a wide variety o
f different wound closure techniques. In addition, our studies of the mecha
nism of wound injury, soil infection-potentiating fractions, dynamic and st
atic skin tensions, and microflora of the skin have become important predic
tors of the outcomes of wound repair. During the new millennium, the comput
erized clinical information system as well as studies of tissue regeneratio
n should dramatically change our approaches to wound repair. (C) 2001 Elsev
