Ultrasonography was first used as a therapeutic aid in endourology in the e
arly 1970s, Since that time, ultrasound has played an important role, and n
owadays, interventional ultrasonography is an established procedure in urol
ogy. Procedures on the kidney, bladder, and prostate, which require differe
nt puncture techniques, are performed under ultrasound guidance. Today, ext
racorporeal shockwaves for the treatment of stones and Peyronie's disease a
re applied under ultrasonic control. Furthermore, high-intensity focused ul
trasound (HIFU) is used experimentally for the treatment of renal tumors an
d, clinically, for the treatment of prostate cancer. In urologic emergencie
s, diagnostic and interventional ultrasonography is an important tool, Inte
rventional ultrasound in urology has become an outstanding tool for the pla
nning and performance of a variety of procedures, and every urologist shoul
d be able to use these technologies.
