The oscillation frequency equation for an electrode-separated piezoele
ctric sensor (ESPS) in a liquid phase was derived theoretically and ve
rified experimentally. The dependences of the frequency shifts on cond
uctivity, permittivity, density and viscosity of the liquid were inves
tigated. The ESPS was applied to determine in situ the adsorption amou
nt of hexadecetyltrimethylammonium bromide on a quartz surface. (C) 19
