The acceleration effects of polarized lead zirconate titanium (Pb(Ti,Zr)O-3
, PZT) on the crystallization of calcium phosphate were demonstrated when P
ZT plates were immersed in saturated solutions of hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca-10
(PO4)(6)(OH)(2)). Moreover, it is indicated that polarization also had infl
uences on the orientation of the deposited crystals because crystalline lay
ers of OCP (Ca8H2(PO4)(6) . 5H(2)O) were found on the negatively charged su
rfaces of PZT. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
