Silicate-bonded silicon carbide refractories have been prepared by reaction
bonding. Mullite or sillimanite was used for bonding of silicon carbide. T
he percentage of silicate bond was varied from 15 to 30 wt.%. Molybdenum di
silicate (4 wt.%) has been used as an infiltrant for silicon carbide refrac
tories. Modulus of rupture (MOR) of these refractories increases with molyb
denum disilicate addition. Thermal expansion coefficients of the refractori
es vary from 32.8 x 10(-6) to 4.1 x 10(-6)/degreesC. These are resistant to
non-ferrous metals but are attacked by molten salts. (C) 2001 Elsevier Sci
