A dorsal vertebra from the Late Jurassic Phu Kradung Formation of Kalasin P
rovince, in northeastern Thailand, is identified as belonging to a stegosau
r of the family Stegosauridae. This is the first unambiguous record of a th
yreophoran dinosaur from Southeast Asia. Stegosaurs were abundant and wides
pread in China in the Late Jurassic, and the Thai find supports the idea th
at the Late Jurassic dinosaur fauna of Southeast Asia was similar to the be
tter known assemblage from China. This is consistent with palaeogeographica
l reconstructions showing that by Jurassic times the Indochina block had be
en in contact with mainland Asia for a long time.
